Technical Guide: Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC) vs. Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC)
Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC 53 Grade - IS 12269)
OPC 53 is a high-grade structural cement formulated primarily from gypsum and clinker. It cures rapidly, achieving high initial compressive strength (over 53 MPa after 28 days of curing). It is recommended for cast-in-situ concrete foundations, load-bearing slabs, flyovers, and columns where shuttering must be removed quickly to maintain speed. It is not suitable for masonry joint plastering due to its susceptibility to micro-cracking.
Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC - IS 1489 Part 1)
PPC is produced by blending pozzolanic materials (fly-ash or calcined clay) with clinker. Although its initial strength build-up is slower than OPC, PPC generates less heat of hydration and continues gaining strength over a longer timeline. Because it is highly resistant to chemical attack and water absorption, it is recommended for plastering, brick jointing, tiling, and coastal RCC slabs.
